In my last post I told you I turned the corner, and that same night I ended up in the ER. We found out that what we thought was a UTI was actually kidney stones, most likely caused by dehydration. I'm not really sure what I expected from my healing timeline, but this was not it. By 2 weeks after surgery I fully expected to be running again. Instead my daily step count is 4500 and my longest walk this week was 1km. Time to sit down and reevaluate my goals and expectations.
My only goal right now is to heal. Healing is hard work. What would it look like to succeed with that goal?
Listen to my body and honour it. Learn when to push and when to rest.
Right now that means sleeping as much as I can, and right now I can sleep a lot. When I'm not sleeping I move my body in a way that feels good, or I rest.
Expectations do not include running right now, but I have a great baseline to build off of now that I know my daily step average.
This is what healing looks like this week:
Emerging from my cocoon to have my hair done at https://flauntsalon.ca/ .
Knowing I was recovering from major surgery, Dana thought of
every detail to make sure I was comfortable during my appointment.
Thank you for making me feel so cared for, Dana.
Changing my ostomy bag set up myself for the first time (thanks to mom for moral support)
Getting back to therapy
Spending my first days alone post surgery
1km walks
Daily stretch routine
Sleeping through the night without pain killers

I cannot believe you got kidney stones on top of your other travails
your positive attitude is inspirational
Hi Erica, I’m following your progress closely. I had a hysterectomy on July 7, same day as your surgery! I’m still healing and listening closely to what my body tells me. Ours bodies are incredible and we will both recover in our own time. Stay strong, you’ve got this! Karen Sanger
Way to go Erica. You're doing great. Remember to take baby steps & you'll do fine. Your hair is beautiful just like you! ❤️
Ah the ups and downs of a recovery journey... good for now to have realistic short-term goals... keep at it! Chuck.
Healing is hard work but it sounds like you‘ve got a great handle on it.
